The Road to Terry - 034 - Why I Started Writing Music

A lot of the feelings I needed to express as a kid were very difficult for me to vocalize. That wasn’t due to shame, that was because I didn’t know what I wanted to say. Music gave me a clear runway to sharing what was going on. I’m a sensitive person. That sensitivity isn’t always expressed outwardly.

Music allows me to be myself, and there is no judgment. It allows me to be vulnerable without feeling ashamed. My journey started with hooks, then extended out to writing raps. Jay-Z’s The Blueprint opened my eyes to that openness. That was the album that showed me the blueprint to writing with emotion. Fast-forward to college and my creative writing professors gave me more tools to write effectively.

When I write today it’s an intuitive thing. I feel what I should say and I write that. Go check out my new song “December” and listen to the emotion there.
